City celebrates Environment Month

ENVIRONMENTAL MONTH

Massive tree planting activities will be conducted by the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) along the diversion road this month.

According to CENRO department head Valiente Lastimosa, this is in line with the celebration of the Environment Month this month of June 2019.

He said that they will be planting mahogany seedlings and bougainvillea plants along the roadsides of the diversion road from Brgy. Mabuhay to Conel roads, as he told the media during the regular press conference of the City Public Information Office over the weekend. Their tree planting schedule at diversion road is from June 17 to June 20, 2019 starting at 6:00 AM.

CENRO has lined up other activities this month of June that included Opening Program on June 3, 2019, 8:00 AM at City Hall Covered Court; Buayan Riverbank Rehabilitation at Barangay Batomelong on June 14, 2019 at 6:00 AM; Coastal Clean up at Bula, Baluan, and Buayan on June 29, 2019 at 6:00 AM; 1st GenSan Urban Biodiversity and Urban Bird Fair on June 18 to 19, 2019, 9:00 AM at Plaza Heneral Santos; Watershed Tree-Growing at Purok Balakayo, Barangay Olympog on June 21, 2019, 6:00 AM; and Mangrove/Coastal Clean up tt Bula, Baluan, and Buayan on June 29, 2019 at 6:00 AM.

Lastimoso also disclosed that the tree planting activities is continuing because their target is to plant 1-million trees by the year 2020 inorder to address pollution and climate change. To date, they have already planted about 700,000 trees since 1997 and he is optimistic that they can achieve their target, he added.

He said that they will be inviting private companies, national government agencies, Non Government Organizations, local government employees and other sectors to participate in the coastal clean up and tree planting activities.

He said that at present, CENRO has about 80,000 seedlings ready for planting which were planted and grown by CENRO personnel.

The theme of this year’s Environment Month celebration is, “Beat Air Pollution”
