Gensan kick-starts citywide Nutrition Month
GENERAL SANTOS CITY – The local government unit of General Santos City, through its City Nutrition Council (CNC) and City Health Office (CHO), did a simultaneous launching of Nutrition Month and Deworming on Thursday, July 4, 2019, at KCC Veranza.
This citywide Nutrition Month celebration was initiated by the city government to further emphasize the importance of health as one of the major thrusts of Mayor Ronnel C. Rivera.
The focus of this year’s Nutrition Month is “Kumain nang Wasto at Maging Aktibo: Push Natin ‘To!”
Dr. Rochelle Gajette – Oco, the acting head of the CHO and action officer of the CNC, said during the event that their current focus is in providing comprehensive health services to the children of the city.
“Healthy aging starts in the womb. Binibigyan namin ng halaga na ang wastong nutrisyon, nagsisimula hindi pa pinapanganak ang bata,” Oco said.
“Pinapahalagahan natin ang balanseng nutrisyon. Kumakain ng tama at gumagalaw,” she continued.
Oco also encouraged the barangay officials to provide a space in their area that will serve as a playground.
“Kailangan po natin ng suporta ng mga kapartner natin sa barangay kung saan ang mga bata ay pwede na makapaglaro,” she emphasized.
A dozen of kindergarten learners were also dewormed during the program.
However, the CHO has expressed that the deworming efforts will take place in every barangay of Gensan.
Councilor Rosalita Nuñez, the head of the Committee on Health and Committee on Education, also graced the event to emphasize importance of eating healthy food.
She also thanked the Jollibee Foundation and RD Foundation Inc. (RDFI) for the school kitchen that they constructed at Datu Acad Dalid Elementary School through the “Busog, Lusog, Talino Program.”
The kitchen is being used to conduct daily feeding to malnourished children in the school and its surrounding communities.
“Ang pangarap ni Mayor Rivera and his wife Jane (Rivera) is for every school to have their own school kitchens,” Nuñez told.
Nuñez is the one who revitalized the City Nutrition Council through an ordinance.
She also authored the Ordinance No. 47 Series of 2018 that institutionalizes the month of July as the Citywide Nutrition Month Celebration.
In a separate interview, Mayor Rivera said that the educational programs of the city government can never be separated from its nutritional programs.
“It for this reason na yung local school board is giving funds for any efforts that can help in improving the nutrition of our children,” the Mayor said.
Just recently, the LSB was able to purchase fifteen (15) dental chairs. These chairs can either be installed in the school clinics or health centers to provide free dental services to the children.
Meanwhile, Councilor Lourdes Casabuena led the oath-taking of the barangay health council officials. (CPIO/IJML/RSC)
